It comes amid growing fears that war-hungry Russian president Vladimir Putin could trigger an all-out global conflict.
US and Polish forces will participate in a large ‘massing’ exercise in Poland at the end of the month.
Washington insists the four battalions will be backed by additional US forces on rotation for the “foreseeable future”.
Among their equipment will be 87 Abrams M1A1 tanks, 20 Paladin artillery vehicles and 136 Bradley fighting vehicles.
General Timothy McGuire said: “The best way to maintain the peace is through preparation.
“This is just showing the strength and cohesion of the alliance and the US commitment to maintain the peace on the continent.”

Christian Goerke, who heads the party in Brandenburg state, said: “Tanks never create peace anywhere.
“Quite the contrary, a troop deployment of such a scale is part of always increasing buildup and provocation.”
Germany’s Left party said it would protest against the deployment
The outspoken Republican, who takes offce on January 20, has repeatedly called for improved relations with Russia.
And he is sceptical of NATO, telling supporters last year: “It’s possible that we’re going to have to let NATO go.”
